The Sea Turtle Association of Japan is a nonprofit organization pioneering understanding of the nature and habitats of sea turtles through empirical and scientific research and promoting action for the advancement of sea turtle biology, conservation and recovery in Japan. As one of their purposes is the conservation of sea turtles as an endangered marine species, they began operating the Muroto Schoolhouse Aquarium on April 26, 2018.
Hawaiʻi has been called the “endangered species capital of the world,” and many tourists are attracted by the chance to see such rare creatures. Hawai‘i’s tourism industry is expected to promote 10 million visitors by 2020. Therefore Hawai‘i, as a top vacation destination, faces an unexpected and unprecedented challenge to protect sensitive marine species from tourism.
